In May 2014, the U.S. EPA released the third edition of its Climate Change Indicators report, which documents indicators of climate change in the United States in order to increase public understanding of long-term trends relating to climate change causes and impacts.  The extreme heat section of the report documents death rates from extreme heat events in the United States between 1979 and 2010.  The report also finds that the number of increased heat-related deaths in the future is likely to be substantially greater than the number of reduced cold-related deaths.  Finally, the report notes that cities that implement extreme heat response plans can reduce heat-related deaths during extreme heat events.
