Abstract / Description

Cool roofs are still more common in commercial building than residential
buildings despite the potential they offer for both markets. EPA (2008)
reports that shipments of ENERGY STAR products constitute about 25% of
the commercial roofing market and about 10% of the residential market.
This project is part of a larger project implemented by the City of San
Antonio (CoSA) Neighborhood & Housing Services Department (NHSD) to
install high solar reflectance roofs in low‐income residential buildings in San
Antonio. The project aims to provide an assessment of the impact of the
new cool roofs on building interior thermal conditions and overall electricity
use as a means of assessing their potential positive impact for the home
owners. This report describes the results of Phase I of the project, which
involved the performance monitoring of 30 homes, all located in CoSA’s
Council District 1. Phase II of the project will include the monitoring of an
additional 30 homes and is expected to start in April 2018 and continue
through May 2019.
